Hypallage

Hypallage refers to a figure of speech in which an epithet (adjective or participle) grammatically refers to the less appropriate of two nouns.

Ex:

Sleepy town: The town cannot be sleepy, but the people living in it can be.

Happy mornings: Mornings cannot be happy, but the people getting up can be.

Terrible day: Day itself is not terrible, but it can turn out as a terrible experience for the people.

Pleased

Pleased: Feeling or showing pleasure and satisfaction; willing or glad to do something; satisfied.

Synonym: glad, content, contented, happy, satisfied.

Example: Mr. Mark was pleased to be with us.

Usage in Sentence: Pleased with, not from.

Don’t say: The teacher is pleased from me.

ü Say: The teacher is pleased with me.

Cheerful

Cheerful = Noticeably happy and optimistic; Causing happiness by its nature or appearance; full of cheer; in good spirits; pleasant; bright; hearty or ungrudging

Synonyms: merry, jolly, joyful, happy, glad, blithe, cheery.

Example – The staff here is friendly and cheerful.

Usage in Sentence: Cheerful in, not of.

Don’t say: Tina is very cheerful of nature.
